Message: Hello Kieran, You're a great man altogether and what ever success comes your way you deserve it. The Rosses Point Page is as close as I'll get to going home so keep her going. Maybe add a few wee bits of information from the Sligo Champion or make the damn stuff up. I replied to the gentleman who was interested in the derivation of the place-name Rosses Point. I offered the following suggestion since in Ireland this naming business can be misleading. The Gaelic for headland is Ros as in Ros Beag (Little Headland) in Donegal or Ros Inbhir (Headland of the estuary) in County Leitrim. I need to warn you here that Ros also means a wood. So generally speaking in the northern half we translate ros as Headland and in the southern part as a wood. There are townlands all over Ireland named Rossmore and the geography of the place will help you choose the correct one.Most Irish placenames are the English pronunciation and spelling of Gaelic words. Thanks Kieran, I probably went on a wee bit here but I have a deep interest in local history and throwing the shape at any question that comes my way. Oh! This was the time I'd be at the Silver Slipper years ago. Brian.

Message: How are you all! Thanks Kieran for the information on Bernard Mac Donagh's proposed trip. Unfortunately out on this island in the middle of the Pacific it's unlikely we'll see it. What I wanted to say in reply to an individual looking for her roots is to surf for information on the net...that's how I reached Rosses Point. I'm wandering a bit. Right, Bernard Mac Donagh was instrumental in producing a pamplet of about 70 pages on The Spanish Armada. It's full of his illustrations and the eyewitness account of Francesco Cuellar in 1588. It's tough reading......'out of the 30,000 soldiers and sailors only 9,000 men returned, the rest were drowned or massacred by the wild Irish clansmen". O'Rourke was one of the clansmen. Perhaps Kieran you might have the personnel in charge of the tour bring a few of these over. Visiting is great and I'm glad people are writing. Maybe down the road we'll organise a trip to Coney Island for all your guests (?) Talk to you later, Brian.

Message: Every year in Rosses Point we remember those from our village who lost their lives at sea. The people of the village and those who have made the journey home gather at the Catholic Church for a mass and prayers at the simple plaque on the wall of the graveyard, under Ben Bulben. The service is attended by people of all religions and this year, for the first time, we welcome our exiles abroad through the Rosses Point and Coney Island website. It will take place on Saturday, August 9. You can find the list by clicking on the Metal Man link on the Front Page and going to Loved Ones. If you know of someone we have missed out in our prayers leave a message here and their name will be added to the list.

Message: I hope this little poem by a Sligo woman will give you an idea of the power of the place to capture you forever. A resident of Cliffoney taught me this and I never forgot it. So I'll share.

THE LITTLE WAVES OF BREFFNY

The grand road from the mountain goes shining to the sea,
And there is traffic on it and many a horse and cart,
But the little roads of Cloonagh are dearer far to me
And the little roads of Cloonagh go rambling through my heart.

A great storm from the ocean goes shouting o'er the hill,
And there is glory in it; and terror on the wind:
But the haunted air of twilight is very strange and still,
And the little winds of twilight are dearer to my mind.

The great waves of the Atlantic sweep storming on their way,
Shining green and silver with the hidden herring shoal;
But the little waves of Breffny have drenched my heart in spray,
And the little waves of Breffny go stumbling through my soul.
