Message: My Father, Cpt Iain Grant, was captain on a Ocean Fleets ship named Patroclus where "Maureen Devaney" was third mate. He sailed a couple of voyage to the Far East with her. She became very good friends with he and his wife Maureen. My husband also sailed with her on the same ship in 1979-1980. I was lucky enough to join my father on a voyage to the Far East in 1979 onboard the Patroclus when Maureen was third mate. My husband Chris Butterworth was also on the same ship with her for a few voyages and she came to Glasgow in 1980 to attend our wedding. We are now back living in Co. Wicklow and would love to hear any news about Maureen. If we look hard enough through our piles of photographs from the time, we have a few photographs of her, one I remember my father taking of her in a hard hat and over-alls working on the deck of the Patrocolus! It was amazing to find this web-site by accident and see Maureens name and family history there...I'm sure that Mr devaney remembers Maureen talking about my Dad and his wife Mo? Hoping somebody out there reads this and passes it to the Devaney family for word of Maureen... Regards...Susan and Chris Butterworth

Message: I was born in Sligo Dec 1946 to Muriel nee Rooney. Brought up in S.Africa and now living in W.Australia. When I was four (1950) I returned to Sligo with my mother for a holiday with her Mum (my Nana) and have retained a lot of those memories. Again, I returned to Sligo in Summer 2004, staying at a guesthouse in Rosses Point. I have written a book about my mothers early life, including her upbringing in Sligo (not yet published)over the years 1910 to 1927. Unfortunately, I could only spend two days in Sligo trying to track down all the places she named and trying to re-capture the visions of my early memories. I found the house where she was born at 3 Chapel street, the police station around the corner where John Rooney, her dad worked, the courthouse at the end of Chapel street and Argue and Phibbs across from the courthouse. I found the hospital on the Mall where once we visited, the river where we walked but I could not find my Nana's house which my memory tells me was next to the Anglican Church on the Mall. Where a school now stands, I remember my Nana's house being a double story flat with the church hall at the rear. I also remember a church yard (small graveyard) in the ground between the church and the Mall which is no longer there. I wonder if any long-lived residents with memories going back to the fifties can confirm my memory of the house and hall next door to the church on the Mall. It was wonderful to capture my own memories, confirm those of my mothers and especially the magic place called Rosses Point and Coney Island that she described so beautifully.

Message: Here in the US, with the Bush Brothers and cronies running the show at a federal level and The Terminator working hard to destroy my teacher pay and not too distant (and perhaps early-ha!) retirement plans in California, I look abroad for voices of reason, peace, and justice. We Americans who are ashamed and disgusted with the insane direction our government, and indeed a large portion of our citizenry, has taken really do exist. We organize, we protest, we hold large rallies, we often get ignored. If it weren't for Senators Byrd and Kennedy, I would surely go mad. I came upon your lovely and fun site on my escapist adventures back to my favorite county in Ireland. Is there some middle-aged person who would be willing to write a note filled with the uncrowded sound of waves, the smell of fish, the cut of wind, the daily concerns of life, politics, arts, anything ? ? ? I would be happy to tell of mine in exchange, if you like. Sincerely, Annie McCance

Her hospitality was fantastic and we have so many happy memories of staying with her and John in Hackett`s over many years. We spent a thousand nights in her company enjoying great pints, craic and playing a few tunes with so many talented musicians and singers during the months of July and August. Mary was always a tremendous hostess and we will never forget her kindness to us all.She will be very sadly missed. Our sincere condolences to her family and all her many friends in Rosses Point and the surrounding district. RIP.

Only clue I had to its whereabouts was a small notice which when magnified showed wording Rosses Point Cab Office. Have discovered that a pretty reasonable scan of image can be obtained and I am anxious that what I imagine will be of interest is shared with for instance a local Heritage Society or similar. I know from the internet there is one but no email address was available. I am willing to scan and send it. It would be a pity if it was not seen as it may not be a common image. Thanks.

Message: I visited Rosses Point twice, the first in 1976 when my husband and I stayed at a small hotel on the shore where I tried to recuperate from falling in a hole made by the cows in front of Templeboy cemetery. For the rest of our two week stay I limped painfully through Sligo nostalgically following my mother's footsteps from Corcagh Mor to Aughris Head and the Lobster pier and strand under the shoulders of Ben Bulben shadowed by mystical Knocknarea. Some years later on a third trip to Sligo I was treated to a lovely meal in a small inn along the road facing the strand. The evening was cool, the shop lights shimmered on the water soothingly. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and our family group was welcomed warmly to a delicious meal. I didn't know then about Jane Meridith....not until I started to search my Sligo ancestors and found that either a gr-gr-gr-grandmother or aunt named Jane Meridith married a Cahaney (John or perhaps, Michael or Richard or Bernie or Alex or ....? My great-great grandmother was Catherine Caheny who married, first, a John Henry, and second,George Grier. Was Jane Meridith her mother or her aunt? Are there any sleuths in Rosses Point who might be able to figure it out for me? I have now passed my 90th birthday, and "Tempus Fugit" while I fidgit, hoping for one more trip to Rosses Point.
