Other Mariners Associated With The Port

Robert Adair of Sligo Town was a fireman on the steamers Kirkcaldy, Carrickfergus and Sligo, and later with the Blue Funnel Line. In September 1940, he joined the SS Brita at Sligo Quays and sailed for New York. After safely re-crossing the North Atlantic the Brita became iced-in at Murmansk, but in the Spring of 1941 re-commenced trading to the Scandinavian and Baltic Ports. Adair eventually got caught up in the changing political scene in that area but as the citizen of a neutral country was allowed to work in a Berlin factory. He was liberated in 1945 and returned to Ireland. He later worked in the Ballisodare Mills and, after some years in retirement, died in 1982, aged seventy five. His brother, Billy Adair, served in the Merchant Navy and now lives in retirement in the USA.

William Adams of Sligo Town served as 2nd Engineer on the SS Tartar and later on the dredger Elsinore.

Tommy Brown served as a deckhand on the Channel Ferry Rosses before joining his brother Freddie as AB on the Carrickfergus and later on the Tartar. They were nephews of Captain McLynn of Rosses Point.

Michael Burns of (Eucharia) Marious House served in the Irish Merchant Navy.

Tommy Conway of the Upper Rosses was for many years Master of the dredger, Elsinore.
